A “Green” Celebration This Weekend for the Furry Friend

by Amy Lignor

When we talk about that furry friend of yours, it seems odd to even say that there is “one” day dedicated just to them. Although, this weekend, “Love Your Pet” day fell on Saturday and it was a special chance to show your cat, dog, pig – you name it – how much you absolutely love them. Now, we all know that unlike Valentine’s Day furry friends, Love your pet day, eco-friendly gifts, cat lovers, love and attention(where many forget that gift or buy the incredibly wrong thing for their sweetheart), the furry friend is always happy with what you purchase and you can never get in trouble.

These are the easy ones to pamper, and it becomes even more fun when you find out all about the eco-friendly gifts you can give to your little guy/girl that help the environment and help you receive that nice, warm hug plus tail wag or purr.

When we are speaking about that loyal friend, the canine, airborne gifts are a whole lot of fun. No, the dog doesn’t need its own drone, but the Frisbee is an old favorite that is still enjoyed today. However, you may want a better one than that old, colored, plastic (and toxic, by the way) classic. Instead, there is a new product called the Zisc made by WestPaw that is colorful, strong, durable, but is still so flexible and easy to catch that your pal’s jaw will never be hurt from all the catching. BPA and phthalate-free, there are two to choose from so that both little guys and big ones can have just the right shape for their particular mouths, and there’s even a glow-in-the-dark one they will absolutely love. It’ll look like their very own UFO lighting up the night.

If you decide that, like your human sweetie wanted on Valentine’s Day, your dog should receive a bit of a treat, why not head to a farmer’s market or pet health food store and get that eco-friendly, heart-friendly, organic bone. Make sure that any treat given is always super-healthy for the one you love the most.

Yes, yes…for the cat people right now they are thinking that old motto: Dogs Drool Cats Rule. But the kitty isn’t left out here. What about a “family” game to play with that buddy, too, instead of doping him/her up on catnip that could be essentially harming his/her health? Make some homemade things using everything from recycled paper to recycled straws. Create your own little hockey pucks or soccer balls and roll them back and forth with your kitty so that they can get exercise chasing them around, and you and your pal can have “us” time.

But what if the cat loves that ultimate climb, yet is not an outdoor feline? Cat trees are in millions of homes where the feline can scratch, claw and climb daily. Problem is… a great many of these products use carpeting for a cover that is actually laced with chemicals (including things like formaldehyde). But what about simply using that Great Outdoors that happens to be right outdoors and bringing in some real tree bark. Can’t get more eco-friendly than that, and it’s durable, safe, and if you wish to be the ultimate carpenter you can make your kitty its very own mansion, hotel or condo out of the bark so they can live in style.

Any of the above will have your pal wagging its tail, purring like crazy, and loving you more than ever. And what does a pet want to do even more than run and play? That’s right – same thing as humans. Your pal wants to take a nap. Before purchasing some of the products out there on the market which, again, are many times made with toxic materials, check into the eco-friendly bedding on the market. Antimicrobial, odor resistant, and made from 100% recyclable materials both inside and out, your “best friend” will be able to snuggle up in style.

What’s the best gift of all? Go to your local humane society and find and bring that pet needing love and attention straight back home! It’s time to start your annual celebration of “Love Your Pet” day…even though it will run 365 days a year. Don’t believe me? Just ask my dog.

Castles in America

Castles in America by Amy Lignor   Robin Leach and his “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” taught us all long ago that we absolutely love to sit and view ridiculous luxury (usually owned by people who inherited all of it and didn’t work a day in their lives). See that? We had to complain about something as we were beguiled by the amount of money people would send to own or create the “best of the best.” Even though some things were referred to as the “gaudiest of … [Read More its Good for You...]

There Are Superheroes Among Us

There Are Superheroes Among Us by Amy Lignor   This story truly proves that a superhero does not require a cape, tights, or the ability to fly. In a world where all headlines seem to be centered around who shot who, who is being put upon, who’s “getting away with it” – all the way to who is getting divorced and who may or may not be kneeling at NFL games – negative stories seem to be the only ones covered anymore by the media. Does the American populace … [Read More its Good for You...]

Spotting the Wild Animal in the U.S. of A.

Spotting the Wild Animal in the U.S. of A. by Amy Lignor   There are many camping spots, zoos, parks, and outdoor paradises across the globe; locales where wild animals roam and humans can get close to these amazing creatures. One of the most beautiful and talked about lies near Canterbury, Kent in the United Kingdom. Opened as a private zoo in 1957, this odd collection is known by many for being one of the most unorthodox. Breeding rare and endangered species, … [Read More its Good for You...]
