An Old Rivalry Still Making Hearts Race

An Old Rivalry Still Making Hearts Race

By Amy Lignor

There was the holding of breath. There were gasps. There were almost tears, and one, Mr. Tom Brady, threw his helmet more than once on the sidelines as his undefeated team went up against their oldest rival in the NFL.

rivalry, Tom Brady, NFL, Patriots, Jets, football momentsYes, the Jets have the best defense this time around. Their offense is good, even though Brady and his team of receivers are great. However, when the game first began, things were looking a tad bit odd considering what the so-called experts had to say before the teams ran out onto the field. Experts had no problem saying that the Patriots would win, and only a few moments went by before the Jets offense dropped the ball and the Patriots were on the board with three points.

Hmmm…three? Yes, that’s where the oddness came into play. Tom Brady was hit. He was knocked down and, perhaps worst of all, his always reliable receivers seemed to have the dropsies all the way through the third quarter. These facts remained: Brady went over 350 yards in passing when the game had come to an end. Two touchdown’s, no interceptions, and went over the 55,000 yard passing mark in his career.

With 18 seconds left on the clock, things had changed. The Patriots had awoken and the Jets were looking at their only hope for a win being the recovery of an onside kick to be able to throw the ball into the air and hope for the best. And…they recovered. Unfortunately for the Jets in this 7th week of the NFL season, they became frantic and watched a yellow flag thrown into the air. The one second left on the clock would allow nothing to happen because of their frenzy. Patriots 30: Jets 23.

We talk about this, the October 25th matchup of these two rivals in the year 2015. But it was September 17th, 1960, that these two teams had their very first meeting on the gridiron. Back then, the New York Titans hosted the back then called, Boston Patriots at New York’s Polo Grounds. It was New York that had three touchdowns leading them to a 24–7 lead in the third quarter. But back then the Patriots were also tough. They had a man, Butch Songin and 109 rushing yards by Patriots who worked hard to bring their team back 24–21 in the fourth quarter, where Chuck Shonta finished off New York when the Titans punter fumbled the snap. Shonta picked it up and ran twenty-five yards for a touchdown.

When you think of rivalries the Jets vs. Patriots is a long one, not to mention important for both considering they both play in the AFC East as they search for that Lombardi trophy every season. The search hasn’t been that hard for New England with the man named Brady, but the Jets still want to get back and earn a new ring for all their hard work.

As far as revenge is concerned, they will meet up again at least once more late in the year…but if the Jets aren’t on top and the Patriots continue to play as well as they have, the Patriots will have no problems seeing the Super Bowl stage when all is said and done.

Phil Simms stated that Tom Brady is the best QB of all time. Others still want to demote him for deflated balls, while still others hold him up as a “good” NFL player. In the end, the fact is that every time that QB gets mad, starts throwing his helmet and shouting/supporting that team of his, the Patriots head back to the locker room STILL undefeated.
