DVD Chronicles Career of Country’s First, White Mariachi Singer

Matthew “Mateo” Stoneman is a proverbial 98-pound weakling with eyeglasses and a concave chest. But don’t let that underwhelming physique fool you. For the nerdy redhead is also a felon who has done a long stretch behind bars in California for robbery and grand larceny.

Mateo, DVD Review, Matthew “Mateo” Stoneman, world's first white Mariachi singerBut while most of his fellow inmates were pumping iron in an effort to become buff, Matthew served his sentence learning to speak Spanish and to play the guitar in order to be able to sing Mariachi, a genre of music he was introduced to by Latino cons he met in the slammer. And after being paroled, he struck out on his own around Los Angeles where he eked out a living between panhandling on street corners and competing with seasoned Chicano performers for gigs at parties and restaurants.

But because Matthew was Caucasian, he managed to gain a little notoriety as the world’s first white Mariachi singer, which led the L.A. Times to publish a lengthy profile on him. He would eventually venture to Cuba to record his own album over a number of years, enlisting the assistance of some surviving members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club as sidemen. On the island, he also met the girlfriend who would bear a child, albeit of questionable paternity.

All of the above is a far cry from what one might expect in a biopic about a gringo born and raised in a tiny town in rural New Hampshire. For that reason, Matthew Stoneman makes for a fascinating subject in Mateo a delightful documentary directed by Aaron I. Naar (I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead).

An uplifting testament to the notion that it’s still possible for a sinner to find his true calling and turn his life around after first paying his debt to society.

Castles in America

Castles in America by Amy Lignor   Robin Leach and his “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” taught us all long ago that we absolutely love to sit and view ridiculous luxury (usually owned by people who inherited all of it and didn’t work a day in their lives). See that? We had to complain about something as we were beguiled by the amount of money people would send to own or create the “best of the best.” Even though some things were referred to as the “gaudiest of … [Read More its Good for You...]

Are Earthquakes Coming to All Towns?

Are Earthquakes Coming to All Towns? by Amy Lignor This past week alone has seen the headlines of every newspaper change. Trump and Clinton are still being yapped about, of course, but the powerful earthquakes that have occurred have shaken the ground beneath everyone far more than the political fiasco going on. The powerful earthquake in Italy killed more than 150 people and basically shattered a town, setting off tremors that actually woke people up in Rome, … [Read More it Good for You...]

Get Ready for Football!

Get Ready for Football! by Amy Lignor   There is a time every year where suddenly the sports news gets far more interesting. No. I’m not talking about the Olympics. Thus far the only thing anyone wants to hear about where Rio is concerned is a virus. What I speak of is that familiar smell of pigskin wafting in the air. The time when the (no offense) more boring sports exit the headlines to make way for the one sport that boasts more avid, loud, and loyal … [Read More its Good for You...]
