The Mad Monk is Back in Rasputin’s Shadow by Raymond Khoury

The Mad Monk is Back in Rasputin’s Shadow by Raymond Khoury

~ Book Review by Amy Lignor

Uniquely plotted, this book offers up a journey connected to the odd mind of Rasputin; the man who was given the historical honor of causing the downfall of the Russian Royal Family.

rasputins-shadow-coverFiction melds with fact, as the Mad Monk works with a partner who is both believable and downright frightening. In truth, both areas – history and imagination – come together to make this story a true page-turner with a magician/confidence man at it’s very core.
We begin on a freezing cold day in 1916, enclosed in a mine located in the Ural Mountains. The miners seem to suffer from a group mental breakdown and begin killing each other, until the mine blows up and takes care of one and all. At the entrance of the mine stands Grigory Rasputin assuring his companion, who is a man of science, that by blowing up the mine they have brought about the salvation of their superior race.

Leaving the Mad Monk behind, the story leads us to present-day New York City. Sean Reilly, an FBI special agent, is checking into the case of a Russian Embassy official who has been hurled to his death from atop his apartment building.

Reilly has a great deal to do, seeing as that he’s also investigating the disappearance of a high school physics teacher named, Leo Sokolov, who turns out to be a descendant of one of the advisors to the famous Rasputin. Sokolov has been working on a device that uses microwaves to alter human behavior, and is responsible for creating a weapon of horror that has the power to make the entire world disappear.

The history, the red-herrings, scary science, exploring the brink of madness – this fascinating tale is a work of art for the suspense lover. Taking the reality of technology in modern-day and blending it with a man who was truly one of the most evil, power-hungry individuals of all time, is a stunning combination that readers will never forget!

Until Next Time,

Amy
